GENRE: Noir poem.
SUBJECT MATTER: Mystery suspense, with humor
SETTING: Midwest, late 1950s

HOLLYWOOD, CA – May 6, 2018: BLUE NIGHT/PERILOUS NIGHT, a noir poem by JULIA NEWTON, is the compelling — sometimes comedic — story of a decapitated woman on a train track in Kankakee, Illinois, and the young female investigator who unravels the tale.

Set in the city of Dufresne on the American prairie, BLUE NIGHT/PERILOUS NIGHT features an irreverent heroine, Rory Cello, as she embraces an unlikely profession for her gender and time: hard-boiled private detective. Alone in her office one night, she is accosted by a menacing stranger who tantalizes her with “something of value” and leaves her unconscious on the floor. In chasing him down, she becomes embroiled in the mystery of a decapitated woman on a railroad track, and the ensuing cover-up — which reaches all the way to the power centers of the city.

BLUE NIGHT/PERILOUS NIGHT was written by former television writer/producer JULIA NEWTON. Prior to her television career, as a playwright, her plays — FLASHPOINT and DINNER AT OUR HOUSE — were produced in New York. THE SPEED OF LIGHT and DARK FOREST, two subsequent plays, were both selected by The National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center, as finalist and semi-finalist, respectively. Her screenplay, RAGGEDY DEVILS (with writing partner John Wierick,) was chosen as a finalist by the Sundance Institute.

Written entirely in blank verse, BLUE NIGHT/PERILOUS NIGHT is MS. NEWTON’S first produced work in poetic form. She is its director and producer, and is presenting the piece at the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2018 as a solo work. All twelve characters in the piece will be performed by MS. NEWTON, a former member of Actors’ Equity, SAG, and AFTRA.
