“Guard this with your life!”

What was it that drove Vincent van Gogh to sever his ear and give it to a prostitute? “The Sower”, by actor / playwright Schuyler Scott Mastain, examines a moment in the life of this incredibly paradoxical artist.

It’s Christmas morning, 1888, in a hospital in the south of France, and a young artist named Vincent wakes to find himself covered in blood and missing his left ear. As the day progresses, a beautiful Nurse and enthusiastic young Doctor tend to him. While dressing his wound, they inquire about his heinous act of self-mutilation, thereby opening a box of pandora that should have been kept closed.

“The Sower”, is a ninety minute one-act drama with an ensemble of five local actors from Los Angeles. Directed by Cal Arts faculty member, Robert Murray Duncan, “The Sower” examines what makes us unique, what makes us artists, and what makes human.
