BROADS’ WORD ENSEMBLE ANNOUNCES LOVES ADVENTURES
A Proud Participant of the 2017 Hollywood Fringe Festival

Love is a battlefield, and Margaret Cavendish was one to take this literally in her 1600s classic, Loves Adventures. The epic follows Lady Orphant, who joins the army to pursue the man she loves, while Lady Bashful fights at home against suitors she has no desire to marry. Known for being a feminist of her time, Cavendish used humor to challenge gender norms in a war many women are still waging.

Broads’ Word Ensemble is proud to return for their third Hollywood Fringe Festival. In 2015, this all-female production company made a splash with their inaugural production, Fifty Shades of Shrew. Last year they challenged casting norms with Must be Comfortable With. This year, they’re celebrating women’s contributions to the classic canon with Margaret Cavendish’s Loves Adventures.

They have infused Loves Adventures with 1980s overtones – not only the fun of Rubik’s Cubes, cootie catcher fortunes, and crimped hair – but also with a nod to this period’s evolution of social attitudes regarding gender, class, and race.

The director, Elissa Anne Polansky, is a Director’s Lab West alumna and Broadway World LA best direction nominee as well as a produced playwright. Her credits include writing/directing Vincent Deconstructed, which premiered at the 2016 Hollywood Fringe Festival, directing Sergel’s To Kill a Mockingbird, directing Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret, and directing the west coast premiere of Sorkin’s The Farnsworth Invention. Her most recent playwriting project, Unpacking Dara, enjoyed a first reading at Samuel French and will be produced in LA later this year.

The cast features company members Tara Donovan (Lady Amorous), Marian Gonzalez (Nurse Fondly), Sylvia Loehndorf (Mrs. Reformer), and Esther Mira (Lady Bashful). Joining them on stage for the Broads’ first co-ed production are Anagabriela Cordero (Player), Chineze Enekwechi (Lady Wagtail), John Hayden (Sir Compliment), Edward Hong (Sir Dumb), Faith Kearns (Lady Orphant), Marc Leclerc (Sir Bold), and Travis Moritz (Lord Singularity).
