Hollywood, CA (May 2, 2017) – Ripley: Kickass women actors improvising artful, long-form narrative. In DYSTOPIA, Ripley Improv tells the tales of young women coming of age against a dystopian backdrop. Like the heroines of The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Handmaid’s Tale, the women of Ripley’s DYSTOPIA rise up and fight the oppressive powers that rule their lives. Ripley improvises one-hour original plays based on audience suggestions. No script, no planning, no net. Each performance of DYSTOPIA is a world premier. This June, Ripley will bring that experience to the Ruby Theatre as part of the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

At the top of every show, audience members provide suggestions and select  the protagonist from a hat. The story begins immediately — there is no discussion; nothing is preconceived. The ensemble and the technical improvisor use their knowledge of the genre and storytelling to improvise a dynamic, physical, heart-felt play that will have you laughing one minute and on the edge of your seat the next.

Amanda Troop, director and ensemble member, sees a tie between the dystopian genre and the process of creating the show. “Young Adult dystopian stories share a common theme: a person who thought she was ordinary discovers an inner strength that makes her extraordinary. The women of Ripley Improv are all remarkable and creative—as director I wanted to help remove any inhibitions or obstacles to letting that extraordinary inner heroine emerge.”

Ripley has performed DYSTOPIA at Impro Studio Theatre in Los Feliz, at the Hollywood Improv Festival, at the Improvised Play Festival in Austin, Texas, and at Sturtevant Camp in the San Gabriel Mountains. Ripley also performs an interactive version of DYSTOPIA on HyperRPG’s Twitch channel.

Ripley Improv’s ensemble of seven women includes Madi Goff, Laurie Jones, Kelly Lohman, Sara Mountjoy-Pepka, Aliza Pearl, Amanda Troop, and Jessica Lynn Verdi. Ripley’s technical director and sound designer is Emily Rose Jacobson. DYSTOPIA was directed by Amanda Troop and produced for the Hollywood Fringe by Kelly Lohman and Jessica Lynn Verdi.

“Creating Ripley felt a little bit like starting a rebellion,” says Madi Goff, founder. “Getting that many playful, intelligent, and powerful women in one ensemble was a delightfully dangerous decision. I never could have imagined what we would become. Ripley is a joy, a family, and most definitely a rebellion.”

Join the rebellion at the Ruby Theatre this June.
