SEX ANYONE the Musical, which makes its world premiere this June at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, has been chosen for a festival scholarship, the City of West Hollywood and HFF17 announced today.

“We are honored to be recognized in this way,” said John Freed, who after a 32-year career at the New York Times wrote the book, music and lyrics for SEX ANYONE, which he described as “a warm, funny, touching, old-fashioned musical about sexual obsession.”

The city, through its One City One Pride Festival, partnered with the Hollywood Fringe Festival to offer participant shows with LGBTQ themes complimentary HFF17 registration.

George Tynan Crowley will direct, and Edgar Cardoso is the music director. Casting is in progress.

Crowley summarized the plot, whose two main characters are John, a journalist, and Marty, his love interest. “John uses sex to seek love and connection. Marty uses alcohol to escape his pain. They try to build a life as their demons and guardian angels battle: lust, booze and despair vs. recovery and hope.”

One City One Pride will explore the locations of West Hollywood through the festival theme “Go West!” For many LGBTQ people, this included the idea of a West Coast utopia, a dream of gay liberation, and the freedom to live lives openly in the West Coast meccas of San Francisco, Los Angeles, and the emerging, influential young City of West Hollywood. Most recently, there has been a wave of artists and creatives moving from New York. For 2017 One City One Pride takes a look at what pride means to those who accepted the call to “Go West!” The festival will comprise performing arts, visual arts, arts interventions, and public art.

The Hollywood Fringe Festival is an annual, open-access, community-derived event celebrating freedom of expression and collaboration in the performing arts community. Each June during the Hollywood Fringe, the arts infiltrate the Hollywood neighborhood: fully equipped theaters, parks, clubs, churches, restaurants and other unexpected places host hundreds of productions by local, national, and international arts companies and independent performers. Participation in the Hollywood Fringe is completely open and uncensored.
