“When I was a little girl, my grandmother used to tell me that when people passed away, they ascended into millions of different heavens…” the show opens.
Inspired by true circumstances, writer and performer Ruth Isabel Guerra shares fantastical and awkward stories of growing up as a Filipina in the American South. This is a one-woman performance told in five chapters, featuring pages from Guerra’s personal journals and multi-media art. Come experience tales of being young, feeling lost, and ultimately, the power of storytelling in the journey of healing. *
Ruth Isabel Guerra is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Los Angeles, CA. She received a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Sewanee: The University of the South and studied film production at The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, Czech Republic. She has experience in playwriting, costume design, scene painting, and has written and directed two short films. Hailing from the Philippines, her family immigrated to America around 9/11, where she grew up in a sleepy Southern town in Georgia. After college, Ruth relocated to the west coast to pursue a teaching fellowship in the Visual and Performing Arts Department at The Episcopal School of Los Angeles. Whether its through a camera lens or on stage, she hopes to continue bridging communities through interdisciplinary arts.
