HOW TO BE GAY

Masc4Masc

view project

Dylan Wallace’s Masc4Masc is an absurdist comedy on modern gay dating where everyone is in a constant struggle to be who they are and something they’re not all at once.

Of course those first couple of months (or years even) after coming out can be awkward as you explore how to enjoy this new freedom, but don’t worry you’ll get it all figured out in no time. Just kidding. Coming out is a huge step in the right direction to continue to be tormented in brand new ways. That’s ok though, we can be gay as long as we follow their straight rules: the girl in the relationship or the boy in the relationship and the like. Most of us at some point in our lives have been told “I’ve always wanted a gay best friend.” It’s really cool when that happens…

And if you can’t figure out if you’re a bear or a twink just wait: someone will let you know. How can you be yourself with everyone else telling you what you are? Will you ever really know who you are? Now that you’ve answered all that you’re ready to date, but every profile says “Masc4Masc” followed by “no fems, no fats, no blacks, no asians.” That sucks. Especially if you’re ALL of those things. And if that sounds racist to you, it’s because it is.

Shocking that a group of people who have been shown hatred for years in a country fueled by toxic masculinity would come up with this sneaky way to establish their own class system. Masc4Masc explores the many ways self-hatred manifests itself and how toxic masculinity in a patriarchal society has become a real party-pooper for a community that shouldn’t be anything less than liberating.
