WOMAN SURVIVES CULT: “SQUEEZE MY CANS” LANDS IN HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood, CA, April 27, 2016 –

Spending most of her young adult life inside a cult, writer-performer Cathy Schenkelberg emerges to premiere her new original solo show “Squeeze My Cans” for nine performances during the Hollywood Fringe Festival (June 10 – June 26, 2016) at Sacred Fools Theater (6322 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90038).

The Church of Scientology had actress Cathy Schenkelberg for 14 years; it took another 5 years to leave them behind in the face of harassing phone calls, midnight knocks on her door by “outreach” staffers, an expensive custody battle and social rejection. She has the courage to tell us this hilarious and horrifying story under the direction of Shirley Anderson with lighting design by Brandon Baruch, sound design by Victoria Deiorio and graphic design by Brett Newton.

“Many of the people who went as far as I did in the Church, lost everything: family, friends, homes, bank accounts, identities and their actual lives.” Cathy says, “I’m lucky to be here and healthy.” Her introduction to the cult was innocent enough; as a young 20-something struggling to make a life for herself, uncertain where to turn for answers, a friend gave her a book (Dianetics) and an appointment to meet with someone named “Rich” at the Fine Arts Building in downtown Chicago.

Schenkelberg workshopped the show this past January at Chicago’s Lifeline Theater, during their 19th Annual Fillet of Solo Festival 2 of the 3 workshop shows were standing-room only in a 120-seat theater.
In presenting this cautionary tale, Cathy Schenkelberg and Shirley Anderson hope to reach: anyone who feels lost, desperate and alone, searching for answers to life’s problems; anyone who has lost a loved one to a damaging cult; and anyone who has already given up their identity, community and life-savings to organizations like $cientology.
