BACK TO BABYLON GOES FROM OFF-BROADWAY
TO THE HOLLYWOOD FRINGE FESTIVAL
West Palm Beach, FL – May 19, 2010 – The critically acclaimed one-man show Back to Babylon, written and performed by Gregg Tomé, will have its first post-Off-Broadway run in the inaugural Hollywood Fringe Festival. Back to Babylon will run at the Theatre of NOTE on June 18 a 10:15 pm, June 19 at 1:45 pm, June 23 at 8:15 pm, June 25 at 6:00 pm and June 26 at 11:45 am. Tickets are $15 by phone (866) 811-4111.
Gregg Tomé was living in Hollywood, California when he wrote and first performed Back To Babylon and this is the first time he will perform the show back in Hollywood since performing it around the U.S. for many years, including in the New York Fringe Festival and Off-Broadway.
Back to Babylon ran Off-Broadway last summer at the Players Theatre and the play’s show history includes other New York theaters such as PS 122, at the New York City Fringe Festival and the Boulton Center for the Arts in Long Island. In Tome’s current hometown of West Palm Beach, Florida the show was produced at the Cuillo Center for the Performing Arts, The Lake Worth Playhouse and Theatre West. Past Los Angeles venues include Theatre at the Improv, First Stage, and The Space.
When the show was performed in the New York City Fringe Festival, NewYorkTheater.com wrote that it “may very well be the finest show in FringeNYC this year,” and that Tome’s performance was “remarkable – I could of sworn there were nine actors on stage.” Comparing Tomé with some of the most renowned writers of our time, New Times, Miami wrote, “Woody Allen has Manhattan, Neil Simon has Yonkers and Gregg Tomé has Babylon Long Island.”
Back to Babylon is a humorous and poignant trip down suburban memory lane in the 1970’s. The story revolves around a close-knit circle of Long Island townies struggling to define themselves within a haze of youthful revelry, while heading toward a tragic event that forever connects them to each other and their town.
Back to Babylon’s plot is centered in Long Island, as it is based on Tome’s formative years living there, but the universal themes of the play make it much more than a provincial story. Backstage.com wrote “The show holds the attention of non-Long Islanders for (its) unmistakable authenticity” and the shows humorous characters has everyone who sees the play laughing out loud.
