The Scherzo Theatre Company presents

“8:03”
Encore Series
July 10 – July 11, 2015
at the Bootleg Theater

Los Angeles, CA—Recipient of three Hollywood Fringe Festival ’15 awards, the Scherzo Theatre Company proudly re-mounts the original production “8:03” at the Bootleg Theater. Inspired by Absurdism, Clowning, and Movement Theatre, and through the collaboration of Jakob Berger, Adam Dlugolecki, and Kent Jenkins, the Los Angeles-based theatre company is returning to the stage with their award-winning play, which explores the dangerous reality of living in a perfectly organized world.

In a world where the food is good and everything runs on time; the bell dings and the system begins. Three characters work together to seamlessly and efficiently accomplish their job: making a cookie. Day in and day out, their life’s work consists of creating cookies, without a question as to why. When a stray drip causes their oven to malfunction, their perfectly ordered world is thrown into disarray, leading them on an adventure to discover what it means to be fully independent.

“The initial concept behind “8:03” was that Jakob, Adam and I were annoyed with theatre shows in Los Angeles that started late. So, we figured why not create an eight o’clock show with a three minute leeway that starts precisely on time? This would force our audience to feel the same high stakes that our characters do onstage from the very beginning." -Kent Jenkins, co-founder of Scherzo Theatre Company.

This unique and daring production explores the consequences of living in a world where work is the highest priority and machinery is integral to life. In addition to Absurdism, Clowning, and Movement Theatre, the company found inspiration in the biblical Creation Story, Pavlov’s dogs, Rube Goldberg machines and the recent studies about the effects of technology on American society.

Directed and developed by the ensemble, “8:03” features Scherzo Theatre Company members and founders Jakob Berger, Adam Dlugolecki and Kent Jenkins. Working alongside them, Katherine McDowell is the Stage Manager and Assistant Lighting/Sound Designer. Originally devised in 2014 at Loyola Marymount University and premiered in June 2015 at the Hollywood Fringe Festival, the company is very excited to full re-mount this production at the Bootleg Theater as a part of “The Encore! Producers’ Award” series.
