Happy Birthday, Mom

Sex. Race. Age. Family dysfunction. These themes and more drive Meghan Gambling’s irreverent and blush-worthy new play HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM.

In HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM Olivia flies home from college to surprise her mother on her 55th birthday, only to find her clad in leather, waiting for a young man she met on craigslist to come over for sex. When her mother locks herself in the bathroom, Olivia is left to deal with the offending male, as well as a host of friends and family members who show up for their own version of a birthday celebration.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM is the fourth of Gambling’s plays to be produced in Los Angeles. The play will enjoy a seven-show run as part of the 1st Hollywood Fringe Festival June 19th-27th at The Complex’s Dorie Theater, before transferring to New York where it will appear in the 14th Annual New York International Fringe Festival-FringeNYC in August. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM is the second of Gambling’s plays to be produced in New York.

Written and directed by Gambling and co-produced by Jess Frucht, HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM includes a diverse cast starring Janice Lynde, Michelle Glavan, JR Davidson, Jacob Crumbine, Kristen Rozanski, Zack Gold.

Janice Lynde is an Obie Award, Palm D’Or Award, and Drama Critics Circle Award winner, and has starred in many Broadway productions including Pippin, Nine and Butterflies Are Free.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOM experienced a sold out run in March 2010 at The Lex Theater as part of The Racket Collective Theatre Company’s spring season. Gambling wrote the play during her downtime as a researcher and writer’s assistant on Fox’s late night talk show, The Wanda Sykes Show.
