premiering at Hollywood Fringe Festival

WHAT:
As we live our lives, many questions arise. What are we doing now? And where did we expect to be? Have we lived up to our expectations? Especially in transition periods of life, we lose the sense of either where the future is leading us or how our past expectations played out. Haunted by these thoughts, we return, again and again, to the old harbor of past feelings and ideas, each time with a renewed understandings of lives, the coming time, and ourselves.
Focusing on Ruby, an old man who reminisces on the tapes he recorded earlier his life, going back to the past and trying to know himself better, an act that most of us will do at some point in our lives. The fragments of his earlier life’s narrative is deconstructed and recaps his story in a chiaroscuro of nostalgia, narcissism, and denial – the contemporary amnesia of selective programming. Using contemporary dance as a distinctive way to visualize the narrative of Ruby’s life, Talk About The Past is an exploration of storytelling through movement.
Who We Are:
When We Talk About the Past, What Do We Say? is an original play inspired by Samuel Beckett’s play,Krapp’s Last Tape that is being produced as an international production by a production team of primarily Chinese students and graduates of the UCLA theater department. Joining up with American actors, When We Talk About the Past, What Do We Say? will be premiering at the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival.
We are professional actors and dancers at the early-stage or our career, who have come together for the love of the stage and a passion for exploring new ways of performance. The production team is primarily made up of Chinese students, studying or recently graduated with from UCLA. We are trying to bridge the gap between school and the real world, Chinese and American Culture. As international students from China, it is an inspiring journey for us to go abroad to study Theater, while still carrying our own cultural backgrounds and experiences in a different culture. Being in the middle of a transitional time and between two cultures, we are constantly thinking about the question of who we are, which is the core of this production.
