THE DEVIL YOU SAY, A ONE ACT PUPPET SOLILOQUY - WITH SATAN!

The Devil You Say

view project

The Devil You Say uses puppets as actors to reveal the true essence of Satan, and possibly ourselves. Bloody wars, violent revolts, cries of Armageddon – be it the 15th century or our own, this landscape provides the backdrop for the eternal question: Who bears responsibility, God? Satan? Someone else…? The Devil himself takes the stage to mount his defense and prove who’s really to blame. All using words and sayings attributed to him by History’s greatest writers: Goethe, Marlowe, Byron, Punch & Judy.

Producer, Director, and Performer powerhouse Robin Walsh brings to the Hollywood Fringe and the Asylum Theatre The Devil You Say in its first full theatrical run. Using a 4’ tall “Otome Bunraku” style puppet, Walsh breathes life into a puppet Devil like no other, with live voice and music accompaniment. Adapted from the original one man show “Speak of the Devil,” devised by playwright and actress Yvonne Mitchell, The Devil You Say is comprised of words, sayings, and dialogue attributed to Satan from the 1400’s to the 1900’s, creating an evening of eloquence, seduction, mystery and madness.

“The Devil in literature, from Revelations to Bridie, has proved to be so immensely attractive, that often writers, who started off with Godly intentions to smear his name, have, in spite of themselves, produced a hero. Audacious, courageous, unconquerable, a fellow of brilliant verbal wit, he defies his censors and appears again and again triumphant.” Yvonne Mitchell

The Devil You Say had its original workshop production at the New American Shakespeare Tavern in 2012, and its premiere performance as the opening night of last year’s Los Angeles Puppet Festival. Produced, directed and performed by Robin Walsh, with Adrian Rose Leonard. Jen Simone plays the violin and Kila Packett is the Voice of the Devil.

ROBIN WALSH has built, designed and performed everything from grand puppet ballets, to sock puppets for the Oscars to Hollywood movie monsters. She’s worked in film (Team America: World Police, Men In Black), television (SpongeBob, Family Guy) and stage at Stanford University, the Henson Carriage House and the Eugene O’Neill Puppetry Conference. Come see how far down she’s gone – the depths of Hell. Hope you enjoy.

ADRIAN ROSE LEONARD began exploring professional puppetry in 2007 when she joined the team at Wishing Chair Productions in Nashville, Tennessee. Not only did she discover that she had a knack for manipulating marionettes, but she found the opportunity to indulge her aspirations to design and build puppets of various styles. After moving to Los Angeles in 2011, Adrian had the honor of working at the legendary Bob Baker Marionette Theater, and her puppetry experience began to extend into the realm of television and film. Adrian continues to add to her skill set and looks forward to the discovery and excitement that the world puppetry has to offer.
