My Sister

view project

(Hollywood, California) – The Hollywood Fringe Festival 2015 has announced that the play MY SISTER by Janet Schlapkohl, starring identical twins Emily and Elizabeth Hinkler, will be performed at the Festival on select dates from June 4-27, 2015.

Identical twin sisters. Identical genetic makeup. Identical humor. Identical dreams for their future. Except for one difference that tears them apart. This is the story of My Sister.

My Sister by Janet Schlapkohl features Identical twin sisters Emily and Elizabeth Hinkler in their California debut at the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival this June. This play was specifically written for the Hinkler twins by playwright Janet Schlapkohl, who worked with the Hinklers while at the University of Iowa Playwrights Workshop.

Now, Emily and Elizabeth have brought their intimate and poignant yet humorous play to Hollywood. My Sister by Janet Schlapkohl is the endearing story of identical twin sisters Magda, a cabaret performer, and Matilde, her writer, who lives with Cerebral Palsy. While Magda performs at the cabaret, Matilde is homebound, experiencing the thrilling cabaret only through her mind’s eye.

Set in pre-war 1934 Berlin, the days are growing dark for freedom of expression and for tolerance of people who are “unfit.” Through the dichotomous experiences of Magda and Matilde, My Sister by Janet Schlapkohl moves between their apartment and a cabaret, performance and illness, conformity and self-expression. As Berlin descends into jackbooted fascism, will the identical twins find their glory, or will their dreams be shattered by the cruel regime?

My Sister by Janet Schlapkohl speaks to contemporary issues of human rights, disability awareness, and freedom of expression. The masterful play and its endearing twins (both the characters and the actors) will win the hearts and minds of its audiences.
