The “Presentation Culture” of TED Talks and corporate meeting rooms everywhere gets skewered in the world premiere of DEATH BY POWERPOINT1, at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival. Written & directed by filmmaker JFRobinson (STILL BREATHING, October Films/Paramount), DEATH BY POWERPOINT features four professional thought-leaders who attempt to destroy “Cherished Beliefs” that 21st century moderns may hold dear as they compete for Money, Glory and PowerPoint Immortality. The show opens Saturday, June 21st, 2014, at 5:30 PM and will run for six performances through Sunday, June 29th. The Press Preview is June 8th at 2:30 pm at The Actors Company’s Let Live Theater.
The play is set at the fictional National Global Influencers Finals, where the country’s top speakers compete to destroy the audience’s deeply-held beliefs in their quest to be crowned Global Influencers champion. A comic and slightly existential attack on values that 21st century moderns may hold dear, DEATH BY POWERPOINT features four thought-provoking presentations in a contest that becomes life-or-death itself.
Robinson got the idea for the show years ago when he was Founder and CEO of an international new media company. “I found myself making pitches all over the world with PowerPoint in front of potential partners and investors,” Robinson says, “I remembering making a presentation at the Palais du Cinéma in Cannes at MILIA to more than 1000 people and thinking, what an interesting potential mix of theater and cinema this PowerPoint thing was.” DEATH BY POWERPOINT was born to examine the dramatic and theatrical possibilities of this new and now ubiquitous form of communication/theater. It is Robinson’s first play.
