Savage Players, an LA-based theatre company which hit the scene in 2012 with its critically acclaimed production of “The Psychic Life of Savages” at Los Angeles Theatre Center, is making its Hollywood Fringe Festival debut at The Actor’s Company Theatre with an ensemble adaptation of Aristophanes’ timeless comedy “Lysistrata”.
Why is “Lysistrata” current and timely now more than ever? Because it resonates with the frustration and conflict of stalemate politics.
While faithful to the plot and themes of Aristophanes’ text (in which the enterprising Lysistrata leads the women of Greece in a sex strike to force their husbands to end the Peloponnesian War), Savage Players reimagines the language and setting of the classic comedy. The audience will find itself in today’s Washington DC in the midst of a government shutdown, where warring political parties have brought the country’s progress to a grinding halt.
The production, devised and written by the ensemble, promises to be a physical, bawdy, and interactive romp, exploring the literal meaning of the phrase “sexual politics”.
Josephine Keefe directs. An MFA recipient in Acting from UCLA, she is a founding member and Co-Artistic Director of Savage Players. Josephine received her BFA in performance from DePaul University, Chicago where she was the recipient of the Meryl Reskin Endowed Scholarship. This is her directorial debut.
Her cast for “Lysistrata” includes, in alphabetical order: Caleb Austin, Anne Butler, Lauren Dunagan, Julia Keefe, Cassandra Nwokah, Angelique Robinson, and Colin Simon.
Assistant Director: Shaya Mulcahy. Stage manager: Christina Bryan. Lighting design: Donny Jackson. Sound design/ Composer: Julia Keefe. Costume design: Melanie Fairchild.
Savage Players promises a fresh and funny take on the Greek classic that will make its presentation of “Lysistrata” an unmissable addition to the Hollywood Fringe.
