“THE MISS JULIE DREAM PROJECT”
STARTING SEPTEMBER 5 AT
SON OF SEMELE THEATER

Miss Julie’s crazy again tonight. So is the actress playing her.

Los Angeles, CA—After a hit run at the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival, Fell Swoop Playwrights and Son of Semele’s soseHOST program are teaming up to present a brand-new production of THE MISS JULIE DREAM PROJECT, directed by Katie Chidester. THE MISS JULIE DREAM PROJECT begins September 5 at Son of Semele Theater and runs for eight performances through September 15.

The Fringe world premiere of THE MISS JULIE DREAM PROJECT was praised by LAist for its “serious ideas and ingenious central narrative device.” Cindy Marie Jenkins lauded the performances as “stellar and often surprising” on Bitter-Lemons.com, stating she’s “interested in seeing more from Fell Swoop.” Also on Bitter-Lemons.com, Kat Primeau was similarly impressed: “Fell Swoop Playwrights’ exploration…is surreal, smart, and refreshingly funny…. I found myself engaged by the experiment and excited by the promising ambition of this new playwriting collective.”

Nine members of Fell Swoop Playwrights collaborated for a surreal riff on August Strindberg’s legendary heroine, MISS JULIE. THE MISS JULIE DREAM PROJECT tells the story of Mina, an actress eager to take on the celebrated role. She finds herself in a nightmarish struggle with the character, as this time Julie refuses to accept her tragic fate. Darkly humorous and devilishly insightful, Fell Swoop’s new play catapults our understanding of Strindberg into the 21st century, taking on issues of femininity, sexuality, and the challenges of interpreting difficult works of art.

Directed by Katie Chidester.

Written by Meghan Brown, Samm Hill, J. Holtham, Abbe Levine, Michelle Meyers, Tira Palmquist, Emily Brauer Rogers, Brenda Varda, and Kyle T. Wilson.

For this new production, Fell Swoop will further refine the performance, developing the script with the project’s committed cast and incorporating new design elements to create a unique experience.
“I’ve admired Son of Semele’s productions for years,” said Wilson, Fell Swoop Playwrights’ Co-Founder and Co-Executive Producer. “I’m thrilled to continue working on our show in collaboration with such an innovative theater.”

Fell Swoop Playwrights is a collective of 13 Southern California-based playwrights working together to make developmental and production opportunities for themselves. Founded in 2012 by Tira Palmquist and Kyle T. Wilson, Fell Swoop’s mission is simple: to serve member playwrights by providing ongoing workshops, dramaturgical and administrative support, and opportunities—on the playwright’s terms.

Members of Fell Swoop Playwrights have had their plays developed and/or produced by Rogue Machine, Clubbed Thumb, the Lark Play Development Center, Barnyard Theatre, the Working Theater Collective, Ensemble Studio Theatre (NYC), EST/LA, the Williamstown Theatre Festival, New Dramatists, Magic Theater, CalArts, USC School of Theatre, Center Theatre Group’s Writers’ Workshop, and many others.
soseHOST is the curated guest production program offered by Son of Semele Ensemble which provides like-minded artists with space, equipment and staffing to realize their work. The program is administered by the award-winning theatre company Son of Semele Ensemble and provides production opportunities to 5-8 shows each year with the goal of supporting artists who are making bold choices and forging new ground in their work.
