Hollywood, CA (April 15, 2013): 2010 Hollywood Fringe Best Comedy Nominee and 2011 United Solo Festival Pick “That’s funny. You didn’t sound black on the phone.” returns to the 2013 Hollywood Fringe Festival.

NYC writer and storyteller Jacquetta Szathmari spins an autobiographical tale of a non-conformist black girl in rural Maryland who almost “gives up on black people”, discovers the Official Preppy Handbook, and flees to boarding school with dreams of being upper class and Jesus-free in Connecticut.

Lauded by LA Weekly Critic Paul Birchall as “crackingly smart, funny, philosophical and often politically incorrect”, Szathmari’s solo show is a witty, acerbic, and candid commentary on race/class relations and the failures of modern society as observed by a skeptical young girl.

She has been featured in Barathunde Thurston’s NY Times Best Seller “How to Be Black” and Karyn Langhorne Folan’s “Don’t Bring Home a White Boy.” Szathmari’s stories have repeatedly captured the wallets of NYC, Philadelphia and LA audiences.

The running time is 60 minutes.
